Herbs and spices are used primarily for culinary purposes nowadays, but thousands of years ago they were renowned for their healing properties. Here’s a look at several herbs and spices that can help with weight loss.

Black pepper – Black pepper is one of the most popular seasonings in the world. in fact, along with salt, it probably is one of the top two seasonings in the world. Black pepper, however, is useful for so much more than just adding flavour to your dishes. Black pepper extract is commonly found in many fat burning supplements, and there’s a good reason for that. You see, black pepper contains an active ingredient known as Piperine. Piperine gives the pepper its delicious and distinctive flavour, but it’s also useful for weight loss. Studies have found evidence to suggest that Piperine can prevent the formation of new fat cells in the body. It also has a mild thermogenic effect on the body that helps to boost the metabolism. This means that you can potentially burn off more calories than usual, even in a rested state. It is also commonly used with another spice we’re going to be looking at in a few moments – Turmeric. The reason for this is that it enhances the bioavailability of other nutrients, allowing you to absorb more. 

Turmeric – Turmeric is being hailed as a miracle spice, which is why turmeric extract supplements are now so incredibly popular in the health industry. Turmeric may make a fantastic curry, but it also offers the human body a number of medical benefits. Cinnamon – Many bodybuilders and athletes will add a little cinnamon to their protein shakes when they’re looking to get in shape. This isn’t purely for taste reasons however, it’s because cinnamon can potentially assist with fat loss. Cinnamon has been found to boost the metabolism. As you know, if your metabolism is running faster than normal, it means that you will burn off more calories. The more calories you are burning off, the more fat you will lose. Cinnamon can also help to regulate blood glucose levels in people of all ages, genders, shapes, and sizes and is very effective for people with pre-diabetes. What’s more, it can also reduce an individual’s blood triglycerides, so the less fats you have in your blood stream, the easier you will find it to manage your weight. 

Cayenne pepper – If you enjoy spicy food then this next ingredient will be right up your street. Cayenne pepper is a member of the chilli family. Cayenne chillies are renowned for their fiery, yet fruity flavour and they go incredibly well in a whole variety of different dishes. The chillies get their fiery heat from a compound known as capsaicin. Capsaicin has been found to elevate the body’s core body temperature, which in turn increases the metabolism. When your core temperature increases, your body does its best to regulate this new higher temperature and in order to do that it requires more energy from calories. Your metabolism increases and you burn off more calories. The more calories you burn off, the more fat you will lose and the more energy you can enjoy.

Fenugreek – Fenugreek is another spice that is used in curries and many Asian dishes. It’s unique because not only can Fenugreek seeds be used, but so too can the leaves of fenugreek plants. The leaves are commonly known as Methi leaves. Fenugreek is a very pungent spice so not very much is ever used as it can overpower the dishes. As you didn’t come here to learn how to cook curry however, let’s focus on how fenugreek can assist with weight loss, shall we? Fenugreek doesn’t increase the metabolism like the other ingredients on this list. Fenugreek works by helping to suppress the appetite and to block cravings for unhealthy foods. It also helps to regulate blood glucose uptake levels and control insulin secretion.

Combine these benefits together, and you have the perfect recipe for weight loss and weight management.
